[The Stewartsville Cemetery was founded in 1785. The Cemetery Association was incorporated in 1913, and restoration took place in 1965. Many of the early settlers of this area came from the Appin Stewart mainland of Argyllshire, Scotland. Donald Frank McDonald, a native of Dillon Co, SC and editor of the Glasgow and Edinburgh newspaper "Stories of the Clans", wrote "Since the people who made up the Stewarts of Appin Regiment in the uprising at 1745 (the regiment which lost more men than any other Jacobite regiment in the battle of Culloden, 1746) were McLaurins, Stewarts, Carmichaels, McInnises, McColls, Livingstons, McElyeas, and McCormicks. All these people more or less emigrated to North Carolina at the same time, about 1780, saling directly to Wilmington." The Stewartsville Cemetery Association meets annually in May, working to preserve and improve the condition of the old Stewartsville Cemetery. This listing is a composite of several transcriptions and articles on this old cemetery. Primary material contributed by Joyce M. Gibson, Stewartsville Cemetery Association, based on a newspaper article published in 1965; additional notes from transcriptions by Kelly Pearson, D.A.R. Richmond Co Tombstone Records-Cemetery #42, NC State Archives, historical file in Robeson County Public Library compiled by R. Fairley Morris, as well as cross-referencing to original wills in the NC State Archives. Ms. Gibson is the author of the book Scotland County Emerging 1750-1900, and is also the former president of the Scotland County Genealogy Society. -djk]
