** F A M I L Y S H E E T ** HUSBAND: John Slidell MacKenzie COMBS Occ: Printer b. rept. January 1844 Hampshire Co, WV Civil War Veteran d. 02 December 1909 Ridgeley, Mineral, WV 13th VA Inf, CSA m. 25 December 1871 Westernport, Allegany, MD b. Rose Hill Cemetery, Cumberland, MD John S. COMBS Obituary, The Cumberland Alleganian, 02 Dec 1909 AGED PRINTER DIES SUDDENLY John S. COMBS Died at an Early Hour Friday. GREW UP AT THE CASE. Had Been in the Employ of the Times Many Years - Learned His Apprenticeship Under His Father, the Late J.J. COMBS. Mr. John S. COMBS, printer and all round newspaper man, died rather suddenly Friday morning at 3:30 o'clock at his home in Ridgeley, W.Va, aged 65 years. He had been employed in the composing room of the Evening Times for about twenty years, with the exception of an interval of a year or more, during which time he was employed at Sebring, Ohio. He left his case in this office about a week ago, at which time he complained of being unwell, but his illness did not assume a serious phase until this morning at two o'clock, when he became paralyzed, passing away at the above mentioned hour. Mr. COMBS grew up at the "printer's case". He was a son of the late John J. COMBS of Romney, W.Va, founder of the Romney Review. The son learned to "set type" when a mere youth under his father, and continued in that occupation until death marked him for a victim, with the exception of a few months spent in the Confederate army during the latter years of the Civil War. After the war was over and having served his apprenticeship prior to that time under his father, Mr. COMBS located at Piedmont, W.Va, as a foreman of the Piedmont Independent, but resigned that position to accept a similar one with the Cumberland Daily News, at a time when Captain GRIFFITH was its editor. He later went to Oakland, where he managed the Oakland Democrat for a number of years, virtually doing all the work on that paper, getting out all the copy, and setting the type, his only help being a small boy. The Democrat having changed hands, Mr. COMBS came to this city and went to work setting type on this paper. The deceased was not only a good printer, but he was a clever writer, being a natural born newspaper man. Aside from his newspaper qualifications, he was genial and sociable, and well liked by his employers, colaborers and the people generally. But he has "set" his last "take", and his spirit has gone to the one who gave it. He is survived by the following children: William COMBS, of Ohio; Frank COMBS, Misses Blanche, Pearl and Dewetta COMBS, all of Ridgeley. The funeral arrangements have not yet been completed, but will probably take place Sunday afternoon. Mr. COMBS' wife died about thirteen years ago, and one of his daughters died last April. The following poetic effort is one of the last contributions on the part of the deceased, written at a time when things were not as smooth as they might have been: An Old Printer. Only a printer, old and gray; 'Tis true at times he goes astray. Led by the tempter, under his sway. With whom he has struggled for many a day. "To err is human, to forgive divine", Is a saying trite - not words of mine. In the gloom of this hour there's not a shine Of the Star of Hope for me or mine. Nothing to do but hope and wait, Looking alone to the hand of fate. Will the dawn ever come? At any rate We continue to hope and wait and wait. A moonlight night - but gloom within; A home made sad for not a sin Committed against kith or kin. And only one thought - it might have been. Out of work, with work to do. Strange it is, but alas! too true. Is it any wonder a man gets blue And puts himself in a terrible stew? But to bed I go with a heart not bad, Trusting the world is not so sad As to keep one out on the tag-and-rag Because, forsooth he got on a jag. And in conclusion, I want to say, Maybe there's yet a brighter day For a printer old and feeble and gray. And this is all I want to say: "A man's a man for a' that". Funeral of Mister COMBS. The funeral of John S. COMBS took place Sunday afternoon at his late home in Carpenter Row, Ridgeley, Rev. B. W. KINDLEY officiating. A quartet sang Mr. COMBS' favorite hymn, Nearer My God to Thee, also Saved by Grace. The quartet was composed of Miss Daphne TWIGG, soprano; Miss Carrie PERRIN, alto; R. Mason HILL, bass; D. W. SNYDER, tenor. The pallbearers were all from his brother members of the Typographical Union, namely Messrs. Frank KANE, J. E. BRAMBLE, B. W. WALTERS, Chas. O. ROEMER, O. H. ALBURTIS and Joseph H. WILSON. Interment was made in Rose Hill Cemetery."Resides at Carpenter Row, Ridgeley, WV" - John S. COMBS Obituary, The Cumberland Alleganian, 02 Dec 1909

But remembering that we are too apt to delay saying good and kindly things of our friends till after they have passed away, I inclose it. Your reference to the age of Mr. John J. Whether Mr. COMBS was an original fixture of the Intelligencer, I am not prepared positively to say. That (with the exception of a short arrangement with the Argus) he has been 'there or thereabout', I believe, for at least 45 years. Unselfish, retiring, self-denying and reverent - loyal to his church - in these few have excelled John J. COMBS. With native talent, industry and knowledge of his profession superior to many who have risen higher in the newspaper world, his diffidence and want of self assertion finds him still a Typo. The old and active men of '46 - '53! Are the younger generation filling their places? FOOTE, GIBSON, WHITE, MCDOWELL, ARMSTRONG, VANCE, MYTINGER, PARSONS, ENTLER, REAM, POLING, FRIDDLE, MCILWEE, HARPER - but time and memory fail. In reverie such thoughts passed through the mind of one who may now be called an OLD MAN" - The Hampshire Review, 18 July 1900 "PRINTER FOR 65 YEARS - Interesting History of a West Virginian The visit of Mr. T.F. COMBS, of Hamilton, Tucker County, WVa, to Morgantown recalls a little interesting history in regard to one of the most interesting, remarkable compositors that ever set type on a newspaper in this state, says the Morgantown New Dominion. This interesting character was Mr. John J. COMBS, the father of T.F. COMBS. He was a compositor on the old South Branch Intelligencer from the time it was founded in 1830, till it was sold by the widow of the original proprietor, Mrs. Sallie HARPER, about 1895, except during the four years of the war between the states, during which he conducted a paper of his own, the Argus, at Romney, WVa. Mr. COMBS resumed his place on the Intelligencer after the war, and set type at the same window in the building where he had worked before. He worked at the case by this window for 60 years, and is said to have run the primitive Washington hand press on which the Intelligencer was printed till his shoes had worn a hole in the floor where he stood in operating it. He set type without wearing glasses when he was 83 years old. At the age of 14 years he was apprenticed to the trade. He made it his life work. This remarkable printer had the honor of working on the second oldest paper in the state, the South Branch Intelligencer. The Virginia Free Press, the "Old Family Journal" being its only senior. He was the father of J.A. COMBS, editor of the Piedmont Independent, who so marvelously recovered from terrible injuries received in a railroad accident. The last named Mr. COMBS edits and manages his paper with both limbs more than half gone and one arm cut off. His father died at Romney about two years ago. Mr. T.F. COMBS, now visiting here at the home of Mr. Ways, has worked at the case and also as a reporter. He was for a time conected with one of the dailies at Cumberland, Maryland. For a few years past he has not been engaged in newspaper work." - Cumberland Alleganian, Thursday, August 13, 1903 "OLD PAPERS - In making improvements to the old building on Armstrong street, formerly owned by the McGahans, several copies of the South Branch Intelligencer, which was published at Romney for almost a century, were found. Some of them were dated as far back as 1861. Mr Harper for a long time operated it, and Mr Combs, father of the editor of the Piedmont Independent, had to do with its publication, also the elder Goshorn, father of the Postmaster, Geo T Goshorn of Piedmont." - MINERAL DAILY NEWS, April 26, 1913 "Soon we heard firing up the pike about Jersey Mountain road, but this did not last long. We finally come to the conclusion that it was some persons hiding from the Yankees whom we heard talking and I proposed to Lynn (David Lynn of Cumberland) that we try and get near enough to see who they were. He said well, there is no use for both of us to go. You find out and I will stay where I am until you whistle. I crept toward them as quietly as possible, until I discovered that they were citizens. I went up. There were two of them; Mr. Joseph Poling and Mr. J. J. Combs. They had left town at the first alarm and were lying behind the fence waiting for further developments. They said the firing we heard was up about the Jersey Mt. Road; and that the Yankee cavalry had gone back to town." - Hanging Rock Rebel, p. 21

This was the Romney Academy. Many of the oldest inhabitants of the town went to school there in their youth. John G. COMBS remembers attending school there as early as 1823, at which time he was ten years old. He has, however, no recollection of when it was built." - History of Hampshire County, West Virginia, Maxwell and Swisher, 1897, p.297 "The Virginia Argus, a democratic paper, was established in Romney in the month of July, 1850. Its founder was A.S. TROWBRIDGE, who had formerly followed the profession of teaching in New Orleans. The measure of success was not such as he thought ought to be meted out to his enterprise, so in the year 1857 he sold the paper to Samuel R. SMITH and John G. COMBS, who held it for three years and nine months and in turn sold it to William PARSONS." - History of Hampshire County, West Virginia, Maxwell and Swisher, 1897, p.357 "The twenty-second has passed and no patriotic demonstration was observed in our quiet little village, nor a drum beat even or a gun fired, but our venerable compositor, Mr. John J. COMBS, who has the honor of celebrating the same day, gathered in a few friends to join him in partaking of roast turkey on his seventy-eighth birthday and we were one of the privileged few. May he live to stick type a good long while, and may his remaining years be his happiest, best of all." - South Branch Intelligencer, 26 February 1892 "Mr. J.J. COMBS, and daughter of the late Thos. B. CRAWFORD, in the 57th year of her age, after a short illness, which she bore with christian resignation to the will of God. She was the mother of 13 children, 7 of whom preceded her to the grave. As a wife she was kind and affectionate -- as a mother devoted to her children -- as a neighbor and friend, warm hearted and generous. In the days of her youth she gave her heart to God and connected herself to the Methodist Church. She has gone, we trust, from the Church militant to the Church triumphant. May her children imitate her example. Her remains were interred in Indian Mound Cemetery on Friday evening -- funeral services by Rev. James HIGGINS, assisted by Rev. G.W. SEABER, an old and very highly respected citizen of this community died at his home in Westernport Monday of this week April 2, 1900, after a short illness of about eight days only, caused by pneumonia, aged 77 years, 10 months, 19 days. Mr. SEABER was born at Hanover, Lancaster county, Pa. His parents were of good old German stock, their ancestors having come to the country from Wurtenburg during our Revolutionary war, settling at the time in eastern Pa. Early in life, the parents of Mr. SEABER moved across the line into Maryland, taking up residence near Hagerstown and vicinity Washington county. The deceased himself came to Allegany county in 1856, stopping for a while near Cumberland, but locating permanently at Westernport in 1863, where he followed an active life, known to almost everyone. For a long time after locating here he was in the employ of the B&O Railroad, engaged in the shops here as a carpenter. For quite a number of years past, he has been the sexton of Philos cemetery. Mr. SEABER was twice married. His first wife being a Miss Elizabeth SPONSELLER of Clear Spring, Maryland, the second a Miss Martha PICKETT of Westernport. There were no children of the second union. There were six of the first marriage: Mr. John F. SEABER of Westernport, Mr. Charles SEABER of Cumberland and daughter Laura, also of Cumberland, being the surviving ones. Besides the wife and children mentioned, there are 12 grandchildren living. The deceased was a member of the Lutheran church. He was one of the promoters and organizers of the Lutheran congregation in this community, and was the first superintendent of its Sunday school. Mr. SEABER was perhaps the oldest Oddfellow in Western Maryland, he had been a member of the order for 55 years, joining first Mt. Moriah Lodge No. 32 at Clear Spring. After coming to Westernport, he transferred his membership to Philos Lodge. He was Past Grand Marshall of that lodge. The funeral took place Wednesday and was in charge of Philos Lodge and the ceremonies conducted at the Lutheran church (Hagerstown newspapers please copy)." - Piedmont Herald, 06 April 1900"One of the most pleasing anniversary celebrations of late held among us was that of the 40th anniversary of Philos Lodge No. 91, I.O.O.F. of Westernport which occurred on Wednesday of last week. The lodge was instituted on May 8, 1855 and only two of its charter members are now living, one of them is our esteemed fellow citizen Mr. Geo. W. KILDOW of Piedmont who is yet a member of Philos Lodge and Mr. Harry O. HAMMILL of Garrett county, though the latter does not now hold his membership in this lodge, having withdrawn a number of years ago. Justice George W. SHEETZ of Westernport and Mr. E.J. FREDLOCK of Piedmont hold with Mr. KILDOW the honor of being in membership from the night of the organization to the present time, the two gentlemen joining the lodge by "deposit card" on the night of the institution. Mr. Daniel SEABER is perhaps the oldest in years in the membership of the lodge and is also the "oldest" Oddfellow hereabouts, having been connected with the order since February 1845. Mr. SEABER also bears the distinction of leading three generations of the family in the lodge, his son John F. being a very prominent member of the lodge, and his grandson Fred W. being also in the membership." - Piedmont Herald, 10 May 1895 *** 1900 Census - Died prior to Census being taken in June
