Through his long activity in business, church, and fraternal
circles here, Mr. COMBS became one of Huntington's best

Often accorded the title of "major" by his friends, Mr. COMBS

bestowed in recognition of his manner of conducting auctions.
Often after his retirement he had been recalled to activity
again to hold special sales.

Born in Romney, Hampshire County, July 24, 1844, Mr. COMBS
was the son of the late J. J. COMBS, who at the time of his
death was the country's oldest printer, having learned his
trade from his father, once the employe of Benjamin FRANKLIN.

In 1863, before his nineteenth birthday, Mr. COMBS enlisted in
the Christian S. WHITE Co. of the Confederate army, but when
his company failed to be mustered into service he went to the
Hampshire County militia to serve in the drum and bugle corps.
He later became an orderly for Captain John B. SHEARD, of
the Hampshire Gaurd.

Twice married, his first wife as Miss Mary FULLER of Frostburg,

W.H. SHOMO, of Cumberland, MD, and the late J.J. COMBS.

His second marriage took place in 1888, when Miss Dora M.
CRAWFORD, of Grant County, WVa, became his wife. They
had two daughters, Mrs. GILMORE, and Mrs. W.D. BARR, of
St. Louis, MO.

Mr. COMBS was a member of the M.E. Church, south, becoming
affiliated with it upon its organization during the Civil War. He
was also active in Masonic affairs and was a member of Garnett
Camp, United Confederate Veterans.

Surviving in addition to his widow, two sons and two daughters
are twenty grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

"On June 6th, 1892, an engine was sauntering leasurly back down the
shaded grade but steep from Altamont to Piedmont. Engineer and fireman
were drinking in fresh air and enjoying the scenery of mountain and valley,
breathing in the fragrance of flower and fern. The honeysuckle hung
temptingly from the bank, almost touching the cab, and filling the air with
its rich perfume. The engineer stopped the engine and plucked the flowers,
returning he looke up, and the flowers fell from his trembling hands,
motionless and speechless he stood, and ere he could utter a word there
was a rumbling sound and an engine rounded the curve and dashed into
the one standing there. In the wreck that followed, James R. COMBS
the fireman fell between engine and tender as these parted, and when
men came to his relief they found the wheels had run over leg and arm
and a wheel resting on the other leg. The heavy truck was moved from
his limb and he was taken to his home in Piedmont. "Save me doctor"
he said to the hesitating physicians, "I will find some way to make a
living for myself and family" and then three surgeons went to work, they
amputated his left leg at the knee joint, his right leg above the knee and
his right arm below the elbow, leaving his no joint in either one. He
rallied from the shock and got well. He made good his promise to the
surgeon -- a printer by occupation, the printing business suggested
itself. Within one year from the date of his injury he was editor and
proprietor of the PIEDMONT INDEPENDENT. The courage and will
that carried him through his injuries won success for him in business.
He made the paper a success. It has the largest circulation of any
paper in Mineral County, reaching nearly 2,000. It is strictly a local
paper. Its news is fresh and pithy. It devotes itself to Piedmont and
the section round about and the result is apparent. He is the only
editor of a paper in the world so far known, that is so maimed as is
the editor of the PIEDMONT INDEPENDENT. Yet withal he is cheery
and energetic and devotes himself to his paper.

James R. COMBS is the son of John J. COMBS, the youngest of
13 children. He is 42 years old, married and has a family of 4 children.
His father is the oldest active printer in the state having set type for
the past 61 years. Mr COMBS travels about on a tricycle giving his
personal attention to his paper on which all his business hopes are
centered."
- Piedmont Independent Special Edition June 15, 1900

The above article is from a special edition of the Piedmont Independent
(not the Herald). It appeared to be one of those papers describing local
history and businesses, etc. At the top is a picture of James R. COMBS
in his special tricycle, WITH NO LEGS, all dressed up in a fancy suit with a
bow tie. This paper was transcribed, and I think the transcriber "lost track"
on occasion, so there may be errors or ommissions. I have tried to correct
the obvious mistakes.
