"W.R. WILSON of Green Spring, Dies after a Short Illness --
One of the most unexpected deaths that have occurred in the county
for months was that of Wm. R. WILSON, the well known merchant
at Green Spring, which occurred on Sunday last, about noon. On
Saturday evening, he was in his store, although he was complaining,
and said to some friends who were in the store that evening
transacting some business with him, that he thought he was getting
the grip. That evening he ate for supper some canned beans and
about nine o'clock that night he was taken very ill, vomiting and was
unconscious from the beginning. He grew worse during the night,
and in the morning a telegram was sent to a doctor in Cumberland,
no answer was received, so about eleven o'clock a telegram was
sent to Dr. BRACE in the same city. He came down on No. 6,
but WILSON had been dead for some time before the physician
arrived. The trouble was pronounced by the physician as cholera
morbus.
Wm. R. WILSON was about thirty-five years of age, and leaves a
young wife, and two small children, he having married several years
ago, a Miss BENNINGTON, whose father was pastor of the Southern
Methodist Church at Springfield. Deceased was a plain, manly and
genial young man, with a host of friends, who were greatly shocked
and grieved at the announcement of his death. He was a member
of Clinton Lodge No. 86, AF and AM, of this place.
His remains were brought to the home of his mother, at Springfield,
on the morning train Monday and were interred about noon, funeral
services being held in the Southern Methodist Church, conducted
by Rev. Mr. GRILLBORTZER, Mr. MITCHELL being absent."

- The Hampshire Review, 01 November 1911
"Obituary -- Green Spring, W.Va., Oct. 30 -- In the death of
Jno. O. WILSON at this place on the 24th, the community sustained
a great loss. About 21 months ago Mr. WILSON had a stroke of
paralysis and was extremely ill for several months. Since that
time however while still a sufferer he had improved so much as to
be around the home and move around some little among his friends.
On Friday the 20th, he seemed unusually well and remarked to his
wife he "believed he would soon be well." On Saturday morning
at 5:30 when his wife rose she conversed with him and left him to
rest as he always did until the family breakfast at 7 o'clock.
At that hour she went to call him and found he had sustained
another stroke and was extremely ill. Dr. KIRK was summoned
from Springfield at once and all that loving hands and medical
skill could do was done, but he gradually grew worse and on
Monday afternoon lapsed into unconsciousness from which he never
rallied and at 1:45 on Tuesday afternoon God called this kind
tender loving husband and father, this honorable noble benevolent
soul to Himself. While not a member of any church he was converted
in the M.E. Church, South, four years ago, and his noble unselfish
pure moral life would put to shame the lives of many whose names
appear on church records. He was a great sufferer but bore it
uncomplainingly. During his last illness when he would have a
lucid interval his wife or the doctor would ask how he was, he
would invariably reply "I am all right." So now we know him to
be "all right". Safe at home with God whom he reverenced and
loved.
He was married several years ago to his brother Will's widow, a
daughter of Rev. S.D. BENNINGTON, of the M.E. Church, South.
She, with four small children and his aged mother, survive him.
The funeral, under the auspices of Clinton Lodge, A.F.A.M.,
Romney, W.Va., and Chapel Hill Lodge, I.O.O.F., Cumberland, Md.,
to which lodges he belonged, was held Thursday morning from
his late home. The active pall bearers were Masons and Odd
Fellows, the honorary his friends, R.M. WASHINGTON, J.J. CORNWELL,
R.J. RUCKMAN and Robert WHITE, of Romney; N.B. GUTHRIE, Dr. KIRK,
of Springfield, and J.M. PROCTOR and A.B. TAYLOR, of Green Spring.
Religious services conducted by Revs. H.L. MYERLY and I.G. MICHAEL,
of the M.E. Church, South. Interment at Springfield."
- The Hampshire Review, 08 November 1911
"John O. WILSON, while opening a glass jar twisted off the top and
cut his hand very badly."

Will died. John is a hustler."

"Obituary - Chas. Thomas SHANNON, son of James SHANNON, Esq. of Springfield,
Hampshire Co., W.Va. and Elizabeth SHANNON, his wife, was born in Springfield,
Hampshire Co., Va., August 24, 1852, and died in the same town, Oct. 7, 1886.
He was baptised in infancy by the Rev. Dr. Wm. H. FOOT, of the Presbyterian
Church, but never joined any christian communion.
Although not a member of any church, he was a man of kindest feelings for all.
And did practice many christian virtues, and was considered a very moral man
and maintained a good reputation for probity in all his dealings.
On June 3, 1885 - only about 16 months before his death - he was very happily
married to Mrs. Mary E. WILSON of Springfield, and proved a kind husband to
her, and so treated her children - of a former union - that long before his
death he had gained their very affectionate regard and they now mourn for him
as for an own father.
During his last illness in which he was kept bed fast for several weeks and
which he past with great patience, he was visited often by the writer himself
and by the Rev. Mr. FINLEY - pastor of his father's family - and others, who
earnestly tendered him all possible spiritual aid in a final preparation to
meet God. And a while before his spirit left its tenement of clay, he
professed to be ready and willing to go, having taken hold on God's strength
- even Jesus Christ our savior, and resigned all to his will!
For a man of only 34 years of age, and of such quiet ways, he had secured the
esteem and tender regards of a very large circle of friends, not only
throughout Hampshire Co., (unreadable line), a very large congregation attended
the funeral (at the Presbyterian church) and followed the remains to the grave,
as conducted by the Pastor of the M.E. Church South; and fair ladies bought for
him the sweetest flowers, a cross and a wreath, bearing the appropriate and
precious word "REST". J.J. CARDEN"

"John Wilson was born in March 1816, and his wife was born in the
same month and year. He became the owner of the Seven Springs farm,
and in addition to operating it, conducted a large woolen mill
located on that farm, and a general store at Old Town, prior to the
war of the 60's. In 1865 he moved to Flintstone, Maryland, and
established himself in a general mercantile business, which he
continued to operate until 1880, when increasing infirmities
resulting from inflammatory rheumatism and gout forced his
retirement. With the hope of securing some permanent relief,
he took treatments at Hot Springs, Arkansas, but in vain, and
died in 1886."
