NCRR Improvements: Work continues on the improvements to the NCRR between Greensboro and Cary. As of 23 January 2003, CTC had been extended to milepost H 34.1 (east end of Mebane siding) from H 23.5 (a new control point called "Merrill", located just west of the Pomeroy St. crossing in Graham). Below are a couple of shots of "Fields", at Dudley St. in Greensboro, around milepost H 0.7. This is where the east end of double track will be when station and platform renovations at Greensboro are finished.
Looking west at Fields. The "approach diverging" indication is for Amtrak 73, the Piedmont. They will be taking the diverging track at Elm, just 0.7 mile ahead. ![]()
Default indication at Fields is "stop". ![]()
The next couple of pictures show some other improvements. All pictures were taken in December.

18 Nov. 2002: The November 2002 membership meeting was special for more than just the traditional potluck supper we have during the November meeting; on that night, three of our members -- John Ford, Jim Patton, and Paul Scheible -- received their 25th Anniversary pins from National. Later in the month, we made a special delivery to Bill Shoemaker, who has also been a member of our group for 25 years.

28 Sept. 2002: Our Chapter was honored to be involved in the 25th Anniversary Celebration at the North Carolina Transportation Museum at Historic Spencer Shops. A special dedication ceremony took place around 2 PM that day, as the ribbon was cut on the newly restored Cone Mills boxcar. This car was once owned by our chapter. We donated it to the Museum a couple of years ago and helped finance its cosmetic restoration. Our National Director, Jim Patton, was instrumental in providing information about the car's history and the history of Cone Mills. Today, the Cone Mills car houses an exhibit on the transport of textile raw materials by rail.
