Scholastic Chess
Rationale
Chess can be used as a vehicle to teach students fundamental mental skills in an enjoyable environment.
The fundamental skills are readily transferable to the classroom.
These skills include thinking ahead, concentration, focus, analytical reasoning, visualization and problem solving.
Similar programs exist in Oregon, New York, Germany and Canada which have demonstrated transference of
these skills to the classroom. Also, the OR and NY programs have noted an improvement in classroom behavior,
participation, grades and test scores.
Parental Quotes
The Oregon program has several parental quotes on their web site
(www.chessforsuccess.org).
They express delight with the program and scholastic improvement by their children.
Here are a few quotes:
- "His concentration has improved and it takes less time for him to complete
his assignments at school and at home."
- "I see more concentration and less shyness with other children. Most of all a willingness to succeed at
whatever he may do in life. I also see that if he does not succeed he's willing to try again. Thanks."
- "The chess program has shown me my child can concentrate on a difficult matter.
Improves self-esteem and confidence. He is not physical, a short type child. This is an
outlet for self-improvement in a sport that is not physical. Thank you."
- "Chess is a great after school activity. Jose has learning disabilities in reading and this has
been a great way for him to feel that he fits in and is good at something."
