Here is an example of two different patterns of 8 strands. The green/red braid is made with crochet thread and the red/white one is made from cotton embroidery floss.

 

The two braids on the right are the same 8 strand flat braid pattern. The red/white braid is made from cotton embroidery floss and the blue/white one is made from #3 perle cotton. The braids on the left are oval, also an 8 strand. The black, red & white one is made of #5 perle cotton using more strands than the blue & white one, which is made of #3 Perle cotton.

 

The braid on this marudai is the same pattern as the eight strand flat braids above.

 

This is an eleven strand triangular shaped braid. These braids were used by mariners because they stay tied, but could be untied even when wet.
