Halflife is cool...

You know I had actually never played halflife before much until the past few days. I just played it at a lan at Rich's house once, but my computer kept blowing so i stopped... It's actually a cool game.

VPNs are hard...

I am trying to set up the VPN for the company my dad works for... its really hard, getting paid well at least. If you have any tips about VPNs please do send them to me.

Lan party woes- less people needed

Being the grand entertainer and host that my mother is she is asking that I have no more than 18 people at once at the Lan party :(. I was hoping for about 24 but it's gonna turn out cool anyway. So who is not gonna be able to come? Well, first of all to go unfortunatly are the people that I don't know personally who have registered. This means that if you aren't a friend of mine, or a friend of a friend - sorry. Everyone else should be in the cool though.

I am the slacker

I know I should be updating more, but it's been interesting around here. And i have other web pages to maintain.

I have taken the address off this page and Winterlan 2000 because i am getting near how many people I want to come, and I don't want too many random people from the internet showing up on the doorstep. If you need to know how to get here, email me.

Again, sorry for not updating more.

Matt told me that having 2 cable modems might not work any better since we are pulling off the same pool, I disagree, but then again he is the one with the Cisco and Bay certifications....

Internet Router working again.

Sorry for the lack of updates, but my IP Masq box wasn't working so well for a while, it seems that RedHat 7.0 isn't that great of a distribution. RedHat 6.2 with the newest kernel is still my favorite. Oh well, it's working now and I can resume updates.

One more update: Map to house
In case you don't know how to get here. Here's a map - removed
More registrations, new "close friend", new AD&D group, etc

Wow, life has been fun this weekend. Sorry again for not updating as much as I should, but here's the lowdown on recent events:

  1. Stuff at Weaver has been moving along pretty well. I got there REALLY early friday and worked alot on their page, should finish it this weekend, but I probably won't.
  2. I played with a new AD&D group at Books-A-Million, they seems really good. A few of them were a little green around the edges, but weren't we all at once? I am just glad to see new people who are willing to play every week. The DM is really good. Thanks alot Laurie for inviting me, it's a good group. I even got along well with Kat.
  3. Working in 3d alot recently on my computer. I remember now why I wanted to get SMP working on my computer here. It's sooo damn slow. I really need to get those dual 700s before the Lan. BTW, it seems that SuperMicro (my favorite case and mobo maker) has out some new dual PIII Xeon boards that kick ass, but are really expensive. The good news the though that with Intel's Pentium IVs being out (1.5 ghz for 1100ish), the PIIIs will bottom out price wise soon
  4. For all of you memory slackers with only 64 mb on your system, or those who like sick amounts on your board for GloatWare, I have good news for you. 256 MB PC133 on pricewatch for only $91. Yes, Ninety One dollars. CompUsa charges more than that for 64 MB PC100. Stock up before another Earthquake kills the memory factories in Japan and their economy bottoms out (oh wait that was last year)...
  5. More people are now finally registering. So far we have umm, about 5 confirmed registerees. I know there are ALOT more of you there that just haven't gotten around to this site, or don't know about it. Making fliers/invites for you guys if so.
  6. The NT server is running nicely, might put some more memory in it since it's soo cheap this minute.
  7. Just priced out Will P a new system for about 500, so he might be coming with a new AMD 750 T-bird system, overclocked hopefully to a nice 950.
  8. Cleaned up the garage alot, i am getting ready. There's alot of stuff I still need to do down there.
  9. Lan party circa Thanksgiving as well. Call me about it.
  10. I will be gone most of monday because I have 2 field trips. I have some NC poetry thing until 11, and then I am a speaker at the North Carolina Music Educator's convention which I attended and participated in last year as well. The NC Technology Educator's con was fun recently. The Gov and the head of the schools were there, nice guys. Free food too :)
  11. Just a passing thought, but too bad we don't have a Mud that we could load on a server to play on at the Lan, (ahem Chris, did you ever finish that one? :)?)
  12. And last, but certainly not least, it seems that I have a new "close friend" or something like that. Laurie just asked me to start dating her or something like that after we saw Charlie's Angels tonight. Of course I said yes. Oh, and my fav angel is Cameron Diaz of course. But Laurie is better :)

Sorry for lack of updates, doing stuff in garage

I have moved around a lot of stuff downstairs recently. I put up isulation and a new wall so it will be better downstairs. I have been working on a Linux box for a VPN of my dad's but the stupid nics that supposibly work with linux aren't working too well.

Got a 4.3 GB HD

Tim just brought by a 4.3 gb drive and i am biddin on a 9

November 6 2000
Fun with loading NT

I am loading the NT on my dad's machine tonight, gonna try to fix up the linux box too and get DHCP working as well as getting it to RedHat 7 from 6.2. Wish me luck!

More page updates

I updated the rest of the page, fixed the registration hopefully, and fixed all of those nice broken links on the left. Check them out!

Registration Working!!!

Ok, I got the registration page back up. When I switched hosting I lost the capability for CGI scripts, so I had to remember and look back on my old pages for how to do it elsewise. Thanks for waiting. The other dead links on the right should be fixed soon, if not tonight for the most part.

PlayStation 2's at Best Buy

While this may not concern the Lan party directly, Tim just told me that they are getting in about 100 PS2s over at Best Buy tonight. For those of your who many be wanting to make a little cash they are going on eBay for about 400-500 each, but for sale at Best Buy for 300 I think. They will probably sell out real fast though.

CompUSA job

Tim has convinced me to apply to CompUsa for a job. I know, they suck and overprice stuff, but a lot of llamas buy their iMacs there and it would pay me well enough.

Network setup update

I installed a SCSI card in my dad's system (which will be acting as the server during the Lan), I have some SCSI drives but none of them appear to work. Tim has graciously donated a 4.3 GB IDE drive for use during the Lan which will help out alot. Tim got some other guy at CompUsa to look at signing up for the Lan too. Remember everyone needs to register! I saw a 7 foot rack over at Intrex on Battleground which is looking nice, unneeded really, but nice. I just got a new 300 foot spool of cable too for the Lan.

Games for Lan

I was looking today at having Baldur's Gate 2, Rune, and Star Trek- Elite Forces at the Lan.

Good news for WAN setup

This is good for all of you that can't make it to the Lan for the whole thing, or just can't move your computer at all. I talked to Chris today about the Linux box setup (I am getting RedHat 7.0 server tomorrow!), he said that the reason that he was never able to get routing via ports working in Linux to an NT box is because he didn't know enough about the NT boxes at the time. Well we are in luck since he knows Linux like the back of his hand, and I use NT Server for a few hours a day we should be able to get it so we have two cable modems working for everyone so people from the outside can join in and not lag the surfers and vice versa.

The Page has been moved

You may or may not notice that your browswer was (hopeully) redirected from the www.winterlan2000.50megs.com site. Their service was just too slow. It was almost painful really. I can't use their great counters or Buliten Boards anymore on RR but, this is faster and has no advert at the top. The other link will continue to work and redirect you indefinately.

Lost some news

In updating this page I have lost some of the old news. Well, i didn't really lose it, i just don't fee like reformating and reposting it. There wasn't anything important really anyway.

WinterLan Updated

This is almost gettings scary. As you may or may not notice, I have redone the graphics on the page again. I normally don't maintain pages as well as I should but somehow I am actually maintaining two of them fairly well right now. Check out my other page on www.guilford.k12.nc.us/spages/weaver/index.html It's not as finished as it should be but the Adminstration wanted something up no matter how it looked. I am planning to change that page into something simalar to this one at some point soon.

Sick little boy

Today I am home sick. I am getting the chance to update the page some. After testing it out in other places asides from my house (at which all the computers live in 1280*1024) I found that with the stupid banner at the top, the page isn't hardly viewable. Alas, the ease of updating a page with frames is over. After looking at several good websites (noteably the ones on the PlanetQuake ring) I have decided to go loco on the tables instead of using frames. I will have to use some type of templates in DreamWeaver to make this page sane to maintain.

New Logo

I got sick of this page not having any graphics. I needed to learn flash a little better anyways so I made us a nice new logo. Tell me if it screws up on your computer because I haven't been able to test it out.

Networking thoughts and problems.

After looking over the network configuration for this Lan I have found that we will need some people to bring 10/100 switches. I have only one of them and it's gonna get really slow if we are all going through my 10mb hub. Does anyone know if I can connect 2 ports on the 24-port hub to the switch and mux it? I know it's possible with T-1s, ISDNs, and even 56K modems. But normally there is a router involved. I am concerned about a bottleneck coming out of the 24-port.

Baldur's Gate 2 as a Lan Game

I have looked at Baldur's Gate 2 a little online, it seems that it might be interesting to have it at the Lan Party, even thought it only does 6 players at a time. We could have 2 or 3 servers running at first, and then just go down to one server eventually when people die or get bored with it and want to play a FPS game. I personally would love to mix the roleplaying games and the Lan Party into one. I think my friend Scott has BG 2, i am gonna try to make it to his house to check it out this weekend. Happy Halloween

Found Hosting at 50megs.com
Well, now this page has hosting for it on 50megs.com. I was going to host on Road Runner where I get my service from, but unless I pay more I can't get a domain name with it. From now until I get a new host the site is at www.WinterLan2000.50megs.com
Tested the new 24-port hub

I tested the hub that i just bought, it seems to work ok. I know we won't need the whole thing, and we have a lot of 100mb stuff that we can use, but it's nice in case we need it

October 28 2000
New Hub for the Lan

I bought a Baystack 100 24 port hub for $38!!!, it's not the fastest thing in the world, but now we aren't gonna have to worry about extra ports if we need them. Looking for hosting of this page.

Need RSVPs

Sorry to be asking so soon for this, but as soon as you can confirm that you either can or can't come to the Lan tell me please. Use the registration page or call me at 336-294-9485 about the Lan.

Auctions are good, new computer, etc.

I just got back from the Guilford County Schools Auction. There were only about 120 bidders there and a lot of stuff to go around. They had stacks of computers, including servers. I couldn't get any of the computer with the auction though. The guy who wanted them wasn't bidding too high, but I saw he had a wad of $100 in his hand as was willing to spend them all. He gave me 2 computer cases though, one of them has everything but memory, harddrive and a power supply. The other was just a bare case. I got a new hub out of the deal too. I also have two new pianos which I got for less than $25 each. Oh, there were some tables I got for a dollar that we can use for the Lan too.
